Speedy peer review and reducing publication time

Ever since the start of the online edition of Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences (www.pjms.com.pk) the number of manuscripts being received for publication has increased tremendously. In order to reduce the publication time after the manuscripts are accepted after peer review, the number of articles being included in each issue has been increased. This is an additional issue of the journal published with the same objective of reducing the publication time. However, financial constraints do not permit to change the frequency of publication from Quarterly to Bimonthly as it may not be sustainable in the long run. The issues of simultaneous submission to more than one journal at the same time and duplicate publication have also been highlighted. During the last four years, we detected five such cases. The authors and co-authors of these manuscripts have been debarred from submitting manuscripts in future with intimation to their respective institutions and official agencies like PM&DC. If the authors carefully read instructions and follow them before submission of their manuscripts, it will not only minimize the chances of any trauma to their manuscripts but also accelerate the peer review, editing process and reduce publication time.
